Off Book Series | The Creative Process

What is Creativity?
These are the truths and misconceptions, fears and successes of the process
experienced and told by creatives themselves.

‘‘Creativity has always been essential for our cultural growth, but there are still many misconceptions about this elusive process. Being a powerful creative person involves letting go of preconceived notions of what an artist is, and discovering and inventing new processes that yield great ideas.’’ -via Off Book Series

Framing Animation | The Art of Stop-Motion

‘‘The magic of stop-motion animation has enthralled audiences for over a century, but with the advent of CGI, many thought it was at risk of extinction. Yet despite these fears, animators all over the world continue to manually create unique stories out of physical materials, be it clay, sand or paint, puppets or people. The amount of time and meticulous effort these animators commit makes stop motion uniquely impressive and refreshingly organic in a digital age, and have driven the art form's resurgence in film, commercials, and even on Vine!

Off Book Series | Online Privacy

“Online Privacy: How Did We Get Here?” by PBS Arts: Off Book looks at online privacy from an history, law, and technology perspectives.
‘‘ As technology has evolved over the past two centuries, so have our expectations about privacy. This new digital world allows us to connect with each other with increasing ease, but it has also left our personal information readily available, and our privacy vulnerable. Cultural norms have pushed us all online, seemingly at the mercy of whatever terms of service are put before us. Cookies and tracking allow companies to collect limitless amounts of information about us, often more than we'd share with family and friends. And in the push for national security, the government has collected vast amounts of information as well, often without our knowledge. With the NSA leak reigniting this important debate, we take a closer look at the state of privacy in the digital age.’’

Off Book Series | Artificial Intelligence

**Creative Sunday Series

‘‘ Artificial intelligence is an ever evolving goal for researchers, and the object of endless fascination for writers, filmmakers, and the general public. But despite our best science fiction visions, creating digital intelligence is incredibly difficult. The universe is a very complicated place, and humans have had millions of years to evolve the ability to navigate and make sense of it. Contemporary attempts to create AI have us looking more at how our own brains work to see how a computer could simulate the core activities that create our intelligence. No matter how we get there, it is certain that artificial intelligence will have tremendous impact on our society and economy, and lead us down a path towards evolving our own definitions of humanity.’’

Otherness this week is:

PENDULUM VIDEO
by Jonathan Brainin
a kinetic video installation that creates ocular music with video feedback and also creates some mesmerizingly trippy visuals; "an instrument for generating video feedback" in which amplified microphones swinging over a loudspeaker generated a musical composition of sonic feedback pulses

Otherness | Misc. Projects of the Week

Otherness this week is:

APPLE MAP GLITCH ART
the collection is a record of all the struggles Apple’s algorithms had in handling data and textural mapping; mistakes occur when 2D images are incorrectly mapped onto 3D topography; images present a world, where everything seems to be under gravity’s pull, falling into the center of the Earth

via
IN ORBIT
a steel wire construction with pvc spheres, the installation suspends 25m above the courtyard of kunstsammlung museum, where visitors can move freely between the spheres on all three levels; the spatial configuration becomes an oscillating network of relationships, resonances, and synchronous communication

EIGHTY EIGHT #2: INFLATABLE GARBAGE BAGS
an inflatable garbage bag installation that inflates and deflates in controlled rhythms, creating wave-like animations across the wall and floor; although each bag is mounted in a stationary position, the sequences of inflation and deflation create the impression of lively movements

Are Hackers Heroes or Villains? | Off Book Series

Many people think of hackers as cyber criminals, breaking into computer systems with ill-intent. Though there are plenty of destructive hackers in the world, there have always been people who hack with a different purpose. Some define hacking as "finding creative solutions to technical problems." To them, hacking means having an exploratory mindset about technology, and a willingness to "get under the hood" to tinker and see what happens. Other groups, like Anonymous, employ more subversive hacking practices to forward social and political causes, embedding a social consciousness into the traditionally murky dark-side of security hacking. Looking beyond the media hype and scare tactics, it is clear that "hacking" is a term whose meaning should be up for debate, and that some hackers could in fact be heroes, and not just villains.[offbook]

Water Light Graffiti | Antonin Fourneau

from Digitalarti on Vimeo.

" The "Water Light Graffiti" is a surface made of thousands of LED illuminated by the contact of water. You can use a paintbrush, a water atomizer, your fingers or anything damp to sketch a brightness message or just to draw.
Water Light Graffiti is a wall for ephemeral messages in the urban space without deterioration. A wall to communicate and share magically in the city. As a public installation it invites everyone to be creative in lighting up the night. Anyone can become an instant graffiti artist. "

Manipulating Electronics | The Art of Glitch

**Creative Sunday Series

Glitch Art is manipulating electronics that can help us understand the cultural values of technology today.
"The latest episode of PBS Arts’ “Off Book” series features a trend toward disrupting digital overproduction by deliberately exploiting the weaknesses in new technologies. Glitch artists make use of “naturally occurring” (so to speak) corruptions of software, or create their own corruptions in a process called “databending”—opening images as text files, for example, and adding and/or deleting information from the image.
Unlike punk rock, to which glitch is compared by one of the artists, some glitch art requires a fairly sophisticated understanding of digital technologies."
