Sunday Series | The Century of the Self

- Whatever's in my subconsciousness is none of my business.
- It, certainly, is business.

Been watching Adam Curtis's The Century of the Self documentary series. Thought I'd share it in here.
The video below includes all four episodes: Happiness Machines, The Engineering of Consent, There is a Policeman Inside All Our Heads: He Must Be Destroyed, and Eight People Sipping Wine in Kettering.

WATERMARK | A Film by Jennifer Baichwal & Edward Burtynsky

This Earth day, I would like to direct your attention to a new project by the award-winning filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal & Nick de Pencier in collaboration with photographer Edward Burtynsky. Their documentary WATERMARK is the awesomely produced combination of Burtynsky's famous vast perspectives and filmmakers' second collaboration since their 2006 Manufactured Landscapes.
A feature documentary film that brings together diverse stories from around the globe about our relationship with water: how we are drawn to it, what we learn from it, how we use it and the consequences of that use. We see massive floating abalone farms off China’s Fujian coast and the construction site of the biggest arch dam in the world – the Xiluodu, six times the size of the Hoover. We visit the barren desert delta where the mighty Colorado River no longer reaches the ocean, and the water-intensive leather tanneries of Dhaka.

Otherness | Misc. Projects of the Week

These are some of the awesome (I think) videos circulating the web this week. #otherness

The Bunker of the Last Gunshots | Jeunet & Caro
A group of army men looking a bit disturbed is confined to a bunker. When one of them discovers a dial showing that a countdown has begun, everyone panicks. What is going to happen at the end of the countdown? In this heavily tense atmosphere they all sink gradually into deep madness. (via)

Superscope | Clark
I wanted to make tracks that had subtle depth and longevity but were simple and hooky enough to work on the dance floor. They've been tried and tested many times in different ways at all of my recent live shows. It was also really important to tie the oscilloscope imagery visuals into the art work. All in all I was hoping a singular, potent slab of techno that could be matched with accompanying visuals for the live show. Clark

Confluence | Noah Shulman
Confluence: A convergence of two streams or flows into one point. This film explores microscopic worlds, structures and meanings that exist beyond the naked eye. Confluence was shot using speciality macro lenses and microscopes shot in 4K resolution to bring a hyper-realistic image to life. Confluence was filmed as part of the exhibit Mental Fabrications. - Repetition as one of the most used strategies in contemporary art, literature, music, theatre, dance and film.
- Repetition not as occurrence of the same, but as the difference and creative activity of transformation that produces variations through the act of repetition.

- Repetition as a new experience, encouraging new discoveries and experiments, with different expressions emerging each time.
- Repetition produced via difference and not mimesis.
- Repeat = to begin anew again.
- Repetition as transformation, as concept between identical, different and seemingly like, copy and original, primary and consequent, bringing about a reflection on contemporary issues.

HIGHRISE | An Open-Source Multi-Media Re-Mix Project

Earlier this week, Highrise made its debut at the 51st annual New York Film Festival as part of the Convergence Program. The project is an interactive, open-source online installation/documentary/film/experiment that explores vertical living around the world. A collaboration of National Film Board of Canada and The New York Times Op-Docs, the interactive experience will launch in the New York Times soon.

Off Book Series | Artificial Intelligence

**Creative Sunday Series

‘‘ Artificial intelligence is an ever evolving goal for researchers, and the object of endless fascination for writers, filmmakers, and the general public. But despite our best science fiction visions, creating digital intelligence is incredibly difficult. The universe is a very complicated place, and humans have had millions of years to evolve the ability to navigate and make sense of it. Contemporary attempts to create AI have us looking more at how our own brains work to see how a computer could simulate the core activities that create our intelligence. No matter how we get there, it is certain that artificial intelligence will have tremendous impact on our society and economy, and lead us down a path towards evolving our own definitions of humanity.’’
