Albert Heta is an artist and artistic director of Stacion - Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina in Kosovo. His work includes simple acts of intervention in an existing social condition, responses to a given situation, or rethinking of existing objects. 

His notable works ‘It's time to go visiting: No visa required’, a public intervention on British Airways billboards in Prishtina (2003), 'Embassy of the Republic of Kosova in Cetinje, SCG' (2004) for Cetinje Biennale or his 'Kosovar Pavilion Venice Biennial 2005' (2005) distributed in collaboration with e-flux, are not merely the installations or acts of appropriation, but also acts of engagements with the conditions under which the works were accepted by the curators, media, politicians, and the public.

Stacion - Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina is a project institution for contemporary art and architecture, established in 2006 by artist Albert Heta and architect Vala Osmani.

Stacion has brought for the first time in Kosovo, the exhibit do it, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, from November 15 to December 14, 2013.

Featured Artist | Lui Shtini

Lui Shtini is an Albanian artist living in New York. Born in 1978 in Kavajë, he got his BFA at the Academy of Arts in Tirana shortly before leaving for US in 2000. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2007 and received a NYFA Painting Fellowship in 2010. To learn more about the artist and his work, make sure to read this interview he did for coolhunting.

World's Largest Participatory Art Project | Inside Out by JR

French artist JR returns with another large format city streets "photography" (pasting) project. This time he has created the largest participatory art project with the potential to change the world.

INSIDE OUT is giving everyone the opportunity to share their portrait and make a statement for what they stand for. It is a global platform for people to share their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art. Over 130,000 posters have been sent to more than 108 countries since March 2011.

Open Invitation | PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival

PLURAL+ 2013 Call for Entries

Submit your videos now up until June 30th, 2013

The PLURAL+ Video Festival is a platform that recognizes youth as powerful agents of social change and supports them in addressing the key challenges of their communities related to migration, diversity and social inclusion.

Anyone can enter the Video Festival as long as they are between the ages of 9-25. 

All entries must be received by Midnight (New York City Time, GMT -5hours) on June 30th, 2013. 

The video should be about things like migrant integration, inclusiveness, identity, diversity, human rights and social unity. 

Be creative in your submission. Your video can be done in any style or genre – animation, documentary, drama, music video, comedy etc. – whatever you decide best represents what you think about migration and diversity.

Videos must be between 1 and 5 minutes long, including title and end credits. 

Any submissions falling outside of this time restraint will not be considered.

Preferably all videos should be submitted on DVDs, or through a file hosting website of choice. (see Rules and Regulations)

Your video can be in whatever language you want, however if the language of your video is not English then you must have English subtitles.

A prestigious international jury will select three winners in each age categories (9-12, 13-17, and 18-25). All the winners will be invited to New York, all travel expenses paid, to present their work at the PLURAL+ 2013 Awards Ceremony at the Paley Center for Media in December 2013.

Open Invitation:

The phase of accepting applications for the "Ardhje 2013" award has began.

It is open to all Albanian artists 35 years of age or younger that have already completed their studies.

This is the seventh edition of “ARDHJE” organized by T.I.C.A. (Tirana Institute of Contemporary Art) in collaboration with FSC-Foundation for Civil Society in New York and generous support byFAVA - Foundation for Albanian Visual Arts across borders in Tirana. 

The finalists are selected by an international jury of well-known curators, critics and artists; and will showcase their work as part of the exhibition "ARDHJE 2013" in June 2013.  

The award winner will receive a six-week artist residency in New York, while the two second-prize winners will obtain a two-month residency program at T.I.C.A in Tirana.

TICA is the first centre for contemporary art in Tirana. It offers a much needed permanent platform for Albanian and international contemporary art in Albania. During the last years, the Albanian scene has thrived with various events of different size or quality. The Tirana Biennale has been Albania's most ambitious art event, however a biennale only takes place every second year and this leads to a serious discontinuity in the art scene that also suffers from a highly limited institutional respective private support. TICA has thus been an important complement to support a vital art scene on a more continuous basis through a diverse program supported by a light and flexible organizative structure that has allowed for exhibitions, film screenings and performance events as well as to create a forum for discussions and debates about art, politics and power.

Another important function of TICA is it's international A.I.R. program. The residency program is important as the first structure to offer support and encouragement to promising local artists and for enabling cross-cultural exchange in the Balkan region and beyond, as a response to the lost communication that has led to a nationalistic misuse of culture. Other important functions of TICA are the supporting of artistic production, the establishment of an archive of contemporary art in Albania and a reference library on international contemporary art. A great awareness and a strong engagement in gender-related questions and concerns will also permeate not only the activity of TICA but also its organization as a whole. TICA will be an attempt to reintroduce culture as one of the most effective ways in pushing for critical thinking in relation to our contemporary condition and will bring together all the energies, knowledge and contacts of all its founding members, to create an independent platform for socio-politically engaged contemporary art.

Be part of the first American audiences to watch Nëntori i Dytë and to hear firsthand accounts of film production in Albania from the communist era till today from the country's award-winning director Fatmir Koci (Tirana Year Zero (2001), The Land of Eagles (2007), Time of the Comet (2008), Albanian American producer Donika Bardha (The Land of Eagles) and Albanian American filmmaker and ACP board member Thomas Logoreci.

Director Fatmir Koci's The Land of Eagles is a sweeping archival chronicle of Albania's turbulent 20th century history. Working with producer Donika Bardha, Koci combed Albania's endangered Central State Film Archive to produce this compelling documentary filled with historical footage never before seen by Western audiences.

The brilliant voice-over narration spoken by Michael York was written by Albania's Nobel nominated, Man Booker International Prize-winning novelist Ismail Kadare. The Land of Eagles is an extraordinary glimpse into the Balkan nation’s 100-year history of statehood and 100-year history of cinema.

The Albanian Cinema Project (ACP), Colorlab Corp. and NYU present the first digital restoration and English language subtitled adaptation of renowned Albanian filmmaker Viktor Gjika’s 1982 feature film Nëntori i dytë (The Second November). Nëntori i dytë recounts the story of the events leading up to Albania’s independence from Ottoman rule on November 28, 1912. 

On March 27, 2013, Nëntori i dytë will have its US premiere for a select audience at NYU’s Michelson Theater, followed by a New England premiere at Wesleyan University on March 28, 2013, and a special public screening in New York on March 29, 2013. This is the first ever English language adaptation of the film, and the first film restoration collaboration between The Albanian Cinema Project, the Arkivi Qendror Shteteror I Filmit (Albanian Central State Film Archives) and Colorlab Corp.

Nëntori i dytë (The Second November) was written by the socialist realist author Dhimiter Shuteriqi (along with Kiço Blushi) and directed by Viktor Gjika. Made three years before the death of the country’s dictator, Enver Hoxha, the film premiered in late November 1982, less than a year after the mysterious demise of Mehmet Shehu, Hoxha’s heir apparent. During the production of the film Albania entered one of its darkest periods in its fifty years of Marxist rule. Numerous purges and arrests of government officials and their families became the order of the day. 

On November 3, 2012, Nëntori i dytë opened the “13th Festival of Albanian Film in the 100th Independence Year” at the Millenium Cinema in Tirana, Albania. This marked the world’s first restoration of an Albanian film and an international co-operation between filmmakers, film labs, archives, academics and activists to help preserve a film heritage that is in grave danger. 

Nëntori i dytë has never screened outside of Albania and this restoration marks the first ever English language adaptation of the film. Nëntori i dytë is the first of five films that ACP will preserve over five years. Albania’s film archives hold unique insights into one of Europe’s most complex countries.

Five Films in Five Years

ACP believes the time is now to bring Albania’s film heritage to the world. 

As in the rest of the Balkans, Albania’s post-WWII narrative is of a communist partisan struggle against foreign occupation and, ultimately, of a communist takeover. Yet, Albania's story is unique among Eastern European countries. Dictator Enver Hoxha’s schism first with Yugoslavia and later with the Soviet Union led him to proclaim that the Albanian version of Marxist-Leninism was the only true path to communism. Practicing a strenuous form of Stalinism for nearly 50 years, Albania denounced most Eastern European socialist countries as revisionists, and maintained a strict observance of Hoxha’s own brand of socialist realism. Albanian communists determined that the self-isolation of their country was the only way to implement their puritan brand of state socialism. 

As a result, foreign influence on Albanian cinema was limited to minute cracks in the thick curtain that separated Albania from the rest of the world. Television broadcasts from neighboring countries (especially from Italy), or rare personal journeys of foreign film professionals to the country were the only moments of rupture. The almost complete reliance on socialist realism in filmmaking during communism has caused many Albanians to reject their own cinematic history. More than twenty years have passed since the fall of Hoxha’s regime, yet there is still much resistance to a re-examination of Albania’s state sponsored film productions. For this reason, many have languished in inadequate vaults and are now in danger of being lost forever. 

While Albania leaps into the 21st century, the Albanian Central State Film Archives remain shrouded in darkness. The Albanian Cinema Project is working overtime to bring Albania’s rich cinema history back into the light. 

The Albanian Cinema Project’s ultimate goal is to build a new archives and exhibition space in Tirana, Albania. To achieve this, we have partnered with film preservation laboratories and film festivals throughout the world to preserve 5 Albanian films in 5 years. Each title will screen first at film festivals, with ACP’s partnering institutions and then to the larger public.

There will be four public screenings on Mach 10, 2013 starting at 11:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 19:00h.
