Featured Participants | Venice Architecture Biennale 2014

The 14th International Architecture Biennale, directed by Rem Koolhaas (OMA), will run from June 7 to November 23 November 2014 at the Giardini and the Arsenale in Venice, Italy.
 

This year's curatorial choice “Fundamentals” focuses “on histories – on the inevitable elements of all architecture used by any architect, anywhere, anytime (the door, the floor, the ceiling etc.) and on the evolution of national architectures in the last 100 years.” 

In a press conference earlier today, curator Rem Koolhaas introduced the 65 national participants (including 11 new comers) among them Albania and Kosovo:

About the Artist.

Alketa Ramaj (here) was born in 1983 Përmet, Albania. After receiving her B.A. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Albania, she went on to study in Venice at the Academia of Belle Arti di Bieno. She currently lives and works between Tirana and Venice. Her work has been the subject of widely exhibited group and solo shows, and has won her prizes and residencies locally and internationally. Among others, she has won the Onufri Award (2012) and Ardhje Award (2013).

NO TITLE at STACION – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina appears in the functional architecture designed for another piece that was exhibited as part of the program of STACION – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina. The decision to show this work in this functional structure, powerful but foreign to it, has to do with the physical space where this architecture can function, with the new process initiated by this work, but also the social context and the time when this work is shown. This context is not a foreign to this work.

The work can be seen as a reference of the relationship between a couple as a cycle of what may seem monotony, but in reality is an internal conflict of insecurity and silent domination.
In this context, this reading stimulates thinking about the ‘natural’ acceptance’of the silent domination (or the loud), within and outside traditional man- woman couples and keeping conflict as internal being the modus operandi of our entire society. We don’t only lock our rights and the rights of others, but also our ambitions and dreams, pressured by social norms which are not created to become laws, but are constantly uploaded and recycled by ‘parallel’ societies for daily needs of domination. Shshsh! The boy is sleeping.

The boy sleeps in a context dominated by the disappearance of public institutions which in any context should produce space for the progress of a contemporary society, whose steps to progress cannot be halted by stories of the past, a private interest or a certain belief.

This project is based on the strategic goal of STACION – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina and T.I.C.A to create working space for artists, socio-political workers and independent institutions that in any reality and society are indicators of social development and often are also the only connection with the existing social and political reality.

Open Invitation | Renovation of MARUBI Museum (Phototheque)

The Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Albanian Development Fund and Atelier Albania has launched an international competition on the project “Restoration and Museumization of the National Photo Gallery Marubi” in the city of Shkodër.

This OPEN CALL invites all architects, preservationists, engineers, museologists and curators to come up with a visionary design for a more publicly accessible and contemporary museum. 

The challenge here is much more than deciding how much of the building's history to preserve/restore and how to modernize it in a way that opens it up to the city and its audiences (local & international). It is an opportunity to transform a whole historical, cultural and artistic institution: who it is, how it operates, what it exhibits, why it promotes, etc.
From the way it archives history and restores heritage, to the contemporary dialog it has within and the one it starts with the rest of the city fabric (old and new). 

As I've mentioned before On Preservation: 

Everywhere, urban diversity and historical layers are being replaced by universal, consumer driven, money making aesthetics. According to Koolhaas, this so-called preservation is not favoring the great, the ancient, or that which might deserve it. It has become a selection vulnerable to political motivation and correctness. It is done for the wrong reasons while triggering more development and speculated land values. He argues that the result is a “a new form of historical amnesia, one that, perversely, only further alienates us from the past.”

Their proposal titled “Welcome to Urban Wellness!” is an approach that emphasizes, promotes and plans a healthy future vision for the city, not just dealing with consecutive botched-up quick-fixes. An Urban Wellness, a healthy solution to prolonged urban, social, and economic illnesses it has suffered. “Wars, political events, earthquakes, economic crisis … have left in Gjilan several scars and erroneous situations that now it’s time to be corrected.”

Albert Heta is an artist and artistic director of Stacion - Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina in Kosovo. His work includes simple acts of intervention in an existing social condition, responses to a given situation, or rethinking of existing objects. 

His notable works ‘It's time to go visiting: No visa required’, a public intervention on British Airways billboards in Prishtina (2003), 'Embassy of the Republic of Kosova in Cetinje, SCG' (2004) for Cetinje Biennale or his 'Kosovar Pavilion Venice Biennial 2005' (2005) distributed in collaboration with e-flux, are not merely the installations or acts of appropriation, but also acts of engagements with the conditions under which the works were accepted by the curators, media, politicians, and the public.

Stacion - Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina is a project institution for contemporary art and architecture, established in 2006 by artist Albert Heta and architect Vala Osmani.

Stacion has brought for the first time in Kosovo, the exhibit do it, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, from November 15 to December 14, 2013.

‘‘Almost 100 years after the outbreak of the First World War (Sarajevo) and roughly 20 years after the collapse of Yugoslavia, the wars in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and the bombing of Belgrade by NATO forces, as well as the current accession process to the European Union, it is time to take a closer look at the Balkans. For CULTURESCAPES, it is important to give a society which is still in a state of upheaval a chance to present itself in a different light to the one we are used to in the media. Allowing artists to be heard and present their works within the context of global cultural development is the goal of this edition of the CULTURESCAPES festival. We wish to discover the geographical and cultural diversity and identity of the Balkans. 

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation is currently phasing out its cultural programme in the Western Balkans after almost 20 years: This is a wonderful opportunity to take stock of the current situation and to critically examine the role culture plays in development policies. ’’

Rafet Jonuzi, born in Presevo (1964) currently living in Bregenz, Zurich and Mostar, works in different mediums such as: drawing, photography, instalation, video, sculpture etc.  

Jonuzi took part in numerous group and personal exhibitions International print Biennial, Douro, Portugal / Angel and Shadows, Iternational Art Fair Artbodensee, Dornbirn, Austria, Galerie K12, Bregenz, Austria (solo) / Künstlerhaus Palais Thurn und Taxis, Bregenz (solo) / Bienali i 4 International i Vizatimit, GAK, Prishtinë / Fondation E.Sandoz et David-Neil, Paris, France (solo), Povazska Galerija Umenie, Slovakia (solo) etc. 

At "MIZA" he will make two rooms site-specific installation, which follows as continuation of previous works (Universe in Evolution). This time he works only with flies and fly swatters - victims and offenders - artists and stars. Part of inspiration is the name of Gallery MIZA itself (Fly) and it contains more than 2000 vacuumed flies, first hundred artists from Art-Facts and 100 Fly Swatters. At the exhibition visitors can find out more about the exhibition and work itself.

Në "MIZA" Jonuzi sjell një instalacion (site-specific) që është vazhdimsi e punës disa vjeçare (Universe in Evolution). Por, kësaj here ai vjen me një projekt përbërë: mes mizave, mizëmbytëseve (pallaska) - viktimës dhe kriminelit - artistëve dhe yjeve. Vepra u frymëzua nga emri i hapësirës "MIZA" dhe instalacioni përfshin brenda tij rreth 2000 miza, 100 vrasëse mizash plastike, 100 portrete artistësh të marrë nga ARTFACTS dhe një video. Në ekspozitë do të njiheni edhe me një analizë-koncept rreth fillimit dhe vazhdimësisë të ketij projekti.

Open Invitation | Kino Prizreni

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: KINO PRIZRENI

DokuFest has opened its call for applications for the second edition of Kino Prizreni that will take part during this years festival, to be held in August 17-25 in Prizren.

The selected filmmakers will be invited in Prizren to write, shoot, cut, and screen their films within a short period of time. The films will be made in “guerilla style” and with no budget. But lots of passion. Young artists will have one long week to compose the cast and crew and make their films from scratch. The finished films will be screened in DokuFest 2013.

The call is open to participants of all backgrounds, abilities, skills and experience. Directors, scriptwriters, DOP’s, actors, boom operators, editors, light assistants, musicians, composers, animators, producers, make-up artists, costume designers or simple film enthusiasts can apply.

THIRRJE PËR APLIKIM: KINO PRIZRENI

DokuFest ka hapur thirrjen e aplikimit për edicionin e dytë të Kino Prizrenit, i cili do të mbahet gjatë këtij edicioni të festivalit, më 17-25 gusht në Prizren. 

Filmëbërësit e përzgjedhur do të ftohen në Prizren për të shkruar, xhiruar, edituar dhe për të shfaqur filmat e tyre. Filmat do të xhirohen në stilin “guerrila” dhe pa buxhet. Por me shumë passion. Artistët e rinj do të kenë një javë kohë për të organizuar ekipin e xhirimit si dhe të prodhojnë filmat e tyre. Filmat e përfunduar do të shfaqen në DokuFest 2013.

Thirrja është e hapur për pjesëparrësit nga të gjitha kualifikimet, aftësitë dhe përfojat. Regjisorë, skenaristë, kameraman, aktorë, asistentë të ndriqimit, editor, muzicientë, kompozitorë, animatorë, producentë, make-up artistë, kostumografë apo thjesht entuziaztë të filmit mund të aplikojnë.

Gjon Mili (28 Nëntor 1904 - 14 Shkurt 1984) - fotograf Shqiptaro-Amerikan i njohur për punën e tij në revistën Life.

Galeria Kombëtare e Kosovës organizon edicionin e trembëdhjetë të ekspozitës ndërkombëtare të fotografisë “Gjon Mili” 2013 dhe shpall konkurs për pranimin e fotografive që reflektojnë konceptin kuratorial.

1. Formulari për plotësim mund të merret në Galerinë Kombëtare të Kosovës.
2. Punimet duhet të jenë të pa-ekspozuara në GKK.
3. Biografia personale.
4. Punimi më i suksesshëm do të shpërblehet me Çmimin “Gjon Mili” në vlerë prej 1.000 Euro.

Vetëm, së bashku?

Fotografia është medium i fuqishëm i cili nuk përdoret vetëm nga fotografët dhe artistët por nga gjithë ne. Gjatë gjithë kohës ne bëjmë fotografi dhe i përdorim ato për arsye të ndryshme. Ne e fotografojmë njëri tjetrin në shenjë shkëmbimi të përvojave momentale, apo si mjet që mban mend. Fotografitë janë imazhe që na mbajnë bashkë, por gjithashtu ato janë pjesë e ritualeve shoqërore që bëjnë ndryshime. Ajo më ndan mua nga ti. Ato janë pjesë e identitetit dhe ndihmojnë në krijimin e tij. Ato konfirmojnë ekzistencën tonë, dhe njëkohësisht shtrojnë pyetjen se kush jemi ne?

Në procesin e globalizimit, dhe me rritjen e influencës së internetit, idetë dhe konceptet mbi identitetin dhe individualitetin po ndryshojnë.
Në internet, kufiri në mes privates dhe publikes ndryshon. Këtu ne ndajmë jetën tonë me disa të huaj. Strukturat tradicionale shoqërore të cilat kanë definuar identitetin tonë në të kaluarën po luhaten. Tani jemi më të lirë të zgjedhim kush ne jemi, ku përkasim, me kë dëshirojmë të ndajmë jetën. Vendi ku jetojmë nuk është më definicion i asaj se kush ne jemi.

Por, derisa ne mundohemi të jemi individë apo komunitet unik, njëkohësisht dëshirojmë të përkasim diku: në një grup, komunitet më të gjërë, në botë. Dëshirojmë të jemi të ndryshëm dhe të njëjtë në të njëjtën kohë. 
Ekspozita Gjon Mili XIII fokusohet në rolin që fotografia po luan në ndërtimin e identitetit dhe ndryshimit. Ajo do të eksplorojë, përmes punës së fotografëve dhe artistëve të ndryshëm, kufijtë në mes individuales dhe kolektives, në mes vetes dhe tjetrit, në mes meje dhe teje, dhe si po ndryshojnë këto koncepte në botën e globalizuar. 

Përbrenda kësaj teme në fokus do të jenë tri pika:

A. Vetja dhe tjetri (p.sh. portrete, auto-portrete, fytyra, moda,gjinia)
B. Private dhe publike (p.sh. album familjar, facebook, hapësira publike)
C. Individi dhe grupi (p.sh. fotografi në rrugë, portrete grupore)

Ftesa është e hapur për të gjitha llojet e fotografisë dhe praktikës artistike (fotografi në studio, dokumentarë, konceptuale…). Punët e propozuara duhet të jenë vizuelisht sfiduese dhe të qarta sa i përket konceptit.

Gjon Mili (November 28, 1904 - February 14, 1984) a well-known Albanian-American photographer for Life magazine.

National Gallery of Kosovo is organizing the thirteenth edition of the international photography exhibition Gjon Mili” 2013 and it has just announced a competition for photographs that reflect the curatorial concept.

1. Entry form can be found at the National Gallery of Kosovo. 
2. Work previously displayed at NGK cannot be submitted.

4. The winner image of the “Gjon Mili” award will receive a monetary prize of 1000 Euros. 

Curatorial Concept:

Alone, Together? 

Photography is a powerful medium used not only by photographers and artists, but all of us. We take photos and use them for different reasons. We photograph each other in order to exchange experiences, or to remember. Photos are images that keep us together, but also part of social rituals that make a difference. They separate me from you. They are part of the identity and assist in its creation. They confirm our existence, but also raise the question of who are we?

In the process of globalization and the increasing influence of the internet, ideas and concepts of identity and individuality are changing.
On the Internet, the boundary between private and public changes. Here we share our lives with strangers. Traditional social structures that have defined our identity in the past are wavering. Now we are more free to choose who we are, where we belong, with whom we wish to share our life. Where we live doesn't define who we are anymore.

But, while we try to be individuals or a unique community, we also want to belong somewhere: in a group, in a wider community, in the world. We want to be simultaneously different and the same.
Gjon Mili XIII exhibition focuses on the role of photography in building identity and change. Through the work of various photographers and artists, it will explore boundaries between the individual and the collective, between self and other, between me and you, and how these concepts are changing in the globalized world.

This subject will focus on three areas:

A. Self and the other (i.e. portraits, autoportraits, faces, fashion, gender)
B. Private and public (i.e. family album, facebook, public space)
C. Individ and group (i.e. street photography, group portraits)

All genres of photography and artistic practice (studio photography, photo-documentaries, conceptual...) will be accepted. Proposed work should challenge visually and clearly reflect the concept.
