AGENDA

FRIDAY - March 22, 2013

Autobahn opening and reception//
Miza Gallery
Alban Muja//My name, their city
19:00

“My name, their city”  is a series of photographs that explores a very specific Kosovar phenomenon: that of naming Kosovar children after Albanian cities. During the 70's and 80's this kind of naming was linked to the national dream of unifying all Albanian lands. The isolation from and longing for Albania by Kosovars is materialized in names such as Berat, Milot, Saranda, Gjirokastra, shkodran, Butrint and Vlora - as strange as it seems to locals of these towns.

Alban Muja is a Kosovo-based visual artist and filmmaker. Muja explores the concepts of naming, place and politics in his expansive body of work, which includes video installations, short films, documentaries, drawing, painting and performance. One of his most recent projects, My name, their city will be exhibited as part of Autobahn.

Alban Muja//My name, their city
19:00

Ngjyrosja e Realitetit | Painting Reality

**Creative Sunday Series

What could happen to a neighborhood when streets are transformed from car lanes into pedestrian spaces?

Transporti automobilistik eshte i ndaluar.
Each Sunday (and holiday) certain main streets of Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, and Colombian other municipalities, are used by pedestrians only: as passersby or for entertainment and sports activities. Automotive transportation is blocked off. This event is called Ciclovía and it has taken place since late the late 70s.

Programi Sunday Streets (Rruget te Djelen) eshte eksperimenti me i madh i ketij qyteti, ku me shume hapesira publike iu kthehen njerezve.
This initiative has inspired many other cities throughout the world. One of them is San Francisco, California.
San Francisco's Sunday Streets program is the city's biggest experiment to transfer more of the public realm to people. At each event, several miles of roads are closed to traffic and opened for walking, riding, and a variety of other activities. Organizers hope that the program will help build community, improve health, and promote sustainable transportation.

Rruget te Djelen filloi ne 2008 me tre evente dhe cdo vit ka qene me i madh dhe me i suksesshem se i pari.
Sunday Streets began in 2008 with three events and each year has been bigger and more successful than the previous. [for more info visit sundaystreetssf.com]

Rruget u mbushen plot me njerez.
Sunday Streets, San Francisco's car-free "experiment", received a huge turnout. People flooded the streets.
How were local businesses affected?
Is closing the streets to cars (eventhough for a few hours) good or bad for local businesses?

Ne duhet te ndjekim kete shembull. Le ti kerkojme qytetit te Tiranes te provoje nje "eksperiment" te tille.
Le t'i kthejme me shume hapesira publike njerezve dhe jo makinave.
We need to follow by example. Let's ask the city of Tirana to try a similar "experiment".
Let's return more of the public realm to people and not cars.
Let's help build communities, improve health, and promote sustainable transportation.
[at least on Sundays, just for a few hours]

I'd like to know what all of you think.
Let's make it happen in Tirana.

Bikes, Architecture & "Cycle Space" | Bicikletat, Arkitektura & "Cycle Space"

Steven Flaming is an architect and an urban planning philosopher that loves bicycles. He is currently doing research for his book "Cycle Space," that looks at the connection between architecture and bicycles, in cities around the world. Each city has its own bike culture that makes it unique and distinguishes it from the others. Though everywhere, cyclists access the city differently, which makes them view it and use it in a better way, efficiently.  He writes extensively in his blog, about all these topics and how they come together through design.
A few weeks ago, he was in Portland, OR to check out more about the bike culture there, as part of his book research. Here’s part of an interview he did with J.Maus.
-
Ja nje pjese e intervistes se tij me J.Maus.

Why do bikes have such appeal to architects?
"I think David [Haines] the photographer here said, "Cars are the new cigarettes."
100 years ago architects were fascinated by cars and how cars would transform cities and they were designing buildings that celebrated cars and looked like cars. Now, architects are quite naturally looking at bicycles. A lot of architects are very interested in bicycles; they're always thinking about how the world could be and should be, so it just so happens that a lot more architects cycle than a lot of other professions."
-
Pse bicikletat i terheqin kaq shume arkitektet?
Madje konceptet qe propozonin per ndertesat i perkushtoheshin jo vetem makinave, por edhe ngjanin me to. Ndersa tani arkitektet po ndjekin bicikletat. Shumica e tyre interesohen per bicikletat ne menyre te vazhdueshme, pasi mendojne se si mund te jete dhe duhet te jete bota me to; ndaj edhe arkitektet me shume se profesionistet e tjere, perdorin bicikleta."
<
How does that interest manifest itself in architecture?
"Bicycles are utterly frugal, energy efficient; almost irreducible in the way they go together, they're perfectly designed. There's not all that much room to move without making them worse. So they are a really strong emblem for architects. They're the sorts of things architects want to achieve with their buildings; frugality, perfection, elegance, personality, aspiration, fun."
-
(Me mire prishet.) Pra jane nje shembull vertet i fuqishem per arkitektet. Ato kane te gjitha cilesite qe arkitektet duan te arrijne ne ndertesat e tyre: kursim (buxhet), persosmeri, elegance, personalitet, aspirate dhe kenaqesi."
<
Your book’s working title, and your term for this new field is ‘Cycle Space.’ What exactly is that?
“There are different ways to see cities. If you’re a cyclist, you might not know the names of some of the roads; you might not know certain landmarks. If you’re a driver though, you don’t know the landmarks by which the cyclist navigates and maps out the city in their head… And now we’ve got this fantastic explosion in bike share in a pretty short period of time and a huge bike culture has grown up around that.
We talk about hegemonies in architecture. The car domination is the typical hegemony. But thankfully, we live in this post-modernist age when smaller voices all have a part as well. And even if cyclists only ever make up 10% of the transport share, our voices deserve to be heard and we’ve got a way of seeing the world that is valid.”
-
Titulli i librit qe po shkruani, si dhe emri qe i keni vene kesaj fushe te re eshte "Cycle Space." Cfare eshte kjo me saktesisht?
Dominimi i makinave eshte tipik. Fatmiresisht jetojme ne nje kohe post-moderne, ku edhe zerat me te vegjel kane vendin e tyre.
<
If cycle space is a different way of seeing, then what does it look like in physical form? In the way buildings are designed?
“We’ll have lots of ramps [laughs]. But seriously, there’s a building in Denmark at the moment that is 10 stories high and the access balcony spirals so you can cycle all the way home. That’s one sort of over-the-top measure, to say, what can we really do with bikes?
There are also things about the aesthetics of bicycles that can inform architecture, and I think it differs from place to place. In Holland, people are very practical and matter of fact; they like to cycle because they can do it for a dollar a year. Here in Portland, it’s really a different culture; I think there’s a real tongue-in-cheek attitude in this city, where people like to be different from the rest of America for its own sake. It can be annoying to a country so hooked on gas.”
-
Sikurse realizohet ndertimi i pallateve?
Kjo sjellje mund te provokoje nje vend qe varet kaq shume nga nafta."
