IT STARTED STARTED STARTED SOMEHOW (zoo)
by // nga

February 19 - March 19, 2014 // 19 Shkurt -19 Mars, 2014
Opening // Hapja @19:00 hr

Irgin Sena is an Albanian artist currently living and working in NYC. For selected works and other info, make sure to check out his website, where you'll also find a preview of his piece “it started started started somehow (zoo)” opening at MIZA on Wednesday.

Below, is an excerpt in Albanian via MIZA:

Here is an interview with the artist [in Albanian].

Featured Artist & Exhibit | Ledia Konstandini @MIZA

For its last show of the year and to mark its first anniversary, MIZA Gallery is recognizing the work of Ledia Kostandini, an emerging young Albanian artist with a tremendous body of work.
Her solo exhibit ÇENTRO ESTETIKE (AESTHETIC DOILY) is curated by Eriola Pira and will be in view at MIZA from December 23, 2013 - January 23, 2014. The opening is Monday @7:00pm so don't miss the chance to meet the artist and curator.

End 2013 with an artistic blast☺!

Curated by Eriola Pira.

“ Ledia Kostandini closed the year 2012 with a studio visit. Everyone was invited. The artist’s studio (which she still shares with her colleague, Matilda Odobashi) was transformed into a Salon full of art and life. Previously exposed work, work in progress, discussions, gaiety, coffee and wine, all was served to art-lovers for four days. The artist and her art presented themselves generously, straightforwardly, without the framing of an exhibition or the contextualization of the next curator. It’s rare that we, the public, have such direct access to an artist, let alone her studio, which we imagine as a mysterious place where the artistic process and the work of art are conceptualized and realized before we encounter it in the gallery or elsewhere. Last year’s invitation for a studio visit was a sort of demystification of the artist and a re-introduction to her, by bringing the artist, as well as her labor and artwork closer to the public, who has lost links with the artist as much as contact with art.
Ledia Kostandini will close out the year 2013 at MIZA Gallery. Not in her studio, but there she will be welcoming you this holiday season. What was conceptualized over this past year has taken form, personality, and demands attention and value. The invitation to this exhibition -- the last of their first year -- comes from Miza. The end of the year occasion comes as an offer to reformat, redefine, and re-present the self, our appearance, vision, thought, and approach to the everyday and that which surrounds us. Ledia treats things full of energy and intensity, sometimes with sincere and sometimes with grotesque humor, by changing their function, meaning, and value, by adding elements and other object-parts, not very differently to what happens in beauty salons, gyms, and under the plastic surgeons knife. The objects and installations at Miza follow in the trail of the Surrealists of the early 20th Century and the legacy of Duchamp in the 21st, in a post-industrial context of global production and consumption, where criticism and the celebration of this political, economic and cultural order don’t much differ from one another, if they aren’t the same altogether.
**********
Ledia Kostandini do ta mbyllë 2013-ën në MIZA Galeri.

Open Invitation | Onufri Prize 2013

The Albanian Ministry of Culture & National Gallery of Arts have announced
a call for applications for the 2oth edition of the ONUFRI PRIZE:

The competition, organized annually by the National Gallery of Arts, bears the name of the prominent Albanian medieval iconographer Onufri, and it represents the most important Albanian public prize dedicated to visual arts, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

ONUFRI PRIZE aims to promote and support the vital role that art and creation play in raising awareness to take the pulse of our times, both in terms of reflecting on man and society, and from the perspective of the relevant issues inevitably affecting us. It is considered an open dialogue between artists of different nationalities and backgrounds.

This year's concept is “
Praise Of Doubt”. It is open to all artists regardless of nationality - including all mediums and techniques. The finalists (up to 12 selected) will be invited to show their work in a public exhibition at the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana. A jury of well-known specialists in contemporary art and culture will select the winner.

Things to keep in mind:

· Application Deadline: 10 December 2013

· Finalist Exhibition: 26 December 2013 – 2 February 2014

· Onufri Prize Award: 30 January 2014

· Award Amount: 500,000 ALL (approx. 3500 euros)

PRAISE OF DOUBT
“If we think about the doubt and the state when we normally doubt on something or someone, we generally refer to the word "doubt" in its opposite meaning, that is to say “not to be sure of”. Therefore the doubt corresponds to that feeling of being inwardly insecure. This is expressed with the words “doubtless”, “without any doubt”, etc.
However doubt is twofold. In fact it plays as it were the double face of the same coin. Then the doubt has two faces: one negative and one positive. In its negative sense, the doubt leads to paralysis, like that immobility typical of the state of panic, which leads to nihilism. On the other hand, if doubt is rightly interpreted and addressed, it corresponds to a vibrant space of movement that tends towards something you may desire (this is at the end the reason why you are doubtful).
At a social level, especially in the last decade, doubt inevitably affects almost everyone. There is no more certainty of permanent job (at least in the countries of old Europe). Also in countries considered nowadays as the former Eastern Europe, where new forms of democracy clash between the desire to see the Western models and the strong cultural tradition still ground-rooted among different generations. In these countries the dreams and the utopias toward a change seem to be stalemated and comparable to a state of doubt. In fact the disillusion and the disappointment among the new generations of artists under 30, who invested their scholarship on moving abroad attending MA and Fine Arts Schools, are strongly perceived by them as a failure of government policies and promises for a cultural renaissance.
Recently we are witnesses (without the intention of generalizing all the countries putting them in one basket) of a spread tension. This wave is perceivable in many cases: from Albania to Bulgaria, from Greece and other European nations like Ireland, Spain, Portugal or Italy to the current “Arab Spring” outcomes. The cited tension is a feeling of anxiety more individual than collective that includes the uncertainty of moving outside, or staying “motionless” where you are. Furthermore this mood coincides with the typical doubtful feeling. The fear of not being successful in attaining the own desires and projects means that the dreams could not come true and self-esteem is compromised.
Whenever the lack of confidence is analysed, an innate question raised: “Could we ever be truly confident and hopeful toward the others and ourselves?” This is an open point that relies on confidence rooted in our own primordial intuitions, such as when, symbolically the first roar moves inside.
Eventually, our lives are definitely marked by a constant search of securities and permanency (and in all the spheres of life: the confidence in relationship conventionally agreed through the marriage or civil unions; the permanent job contract; or mortgages to guarantee an immutable and fixed property).
Nevertheless, in the Global era of hyper-flexibility and hyper-speed there is an aspect that is entirely different respect to the past: an approach to dealing with the present that is some how new. We are perpetually torn between a time that does not seem to project us very far, in the sense that it does not delve into the past (in terms of nostalgia for yesteryear), but at the same time it does not go forward either (i.e., it has no long-term perspectives). And in this state of suspension, what prevails is the persistent feeling of doubt that coincides with “being precisely in the present”. In any event, this condition of doubting allows artists to cross the contingent moment with greater awareness. In other words, they don’t stop the search of meaning. - Claudio Cravero

His research and artistic practice is concerned with the public space, the territory and its re-structuring, itself in constant transformation. Two years ago, his photographic project "On the Street" which presented a new compositional dimension of public spaces in Albania, allowed a six-week residency at ISCP, New York. Last year his commitment has been focused on the first alternative space dedicated to visual arts in Albania, "MIZA"Gallery. "MIZA" is a non-institutional and non-commercial space which within a short period of time managed to become an important factor in Albanian art scene and establish links with many national and international personalities and artistic structures.

Featured Artist | Elizabeth Claffey @MIZA

MIZA invites
American artist Elizabeth M. Claffey
with her exhibit "UNIforms"
grand opening on July 1, 2013 @ 8 pm

MIZA fton
artisten Amerikane Elizabeth M. Claffey
me ekspozitën e saj "UNIforma"
inagurimi më 1 korrik 2013 ora 20:00

Elizabeth M. Claffey's "Hospital Gowns" and "The Waiting" both investigate the often cold and stilted experience individuals have within the health system. The medical apparatus, its hardware, architecture, and personnel, are largely focused on efficiency, economy, and hygiene, rather than humanity and nurturing. Because the human body is both the subject and the object of this system, the patient experiences a rift between the psychological and physical self, leading to feelings of anxiety and alienation. Through image, form, and medium, Claffey's work articulates the complex relationship between the individual and their own physical self within this context.

"Hospital Gowns" consists of photographic images of anonymous individuals of both sexes with diverse body types printed on hospital gowns. The breadth of individuals represented in this series suggests that exposure to the medical system is a leveling experience, detached from issues of sex and race. By virtue of the photographic transfer process employed, the images of the bodies appear blurred and fragmentary. This result, coupled with the absence of a face or head, suggest that a weakened or degraded facsimile is all that remains of a former self. The hospital gown, with its apparent starchiness, transparency, and general feeling of cheapness, makes an appropriate substrate for these images, not only because the physical object immediately references a medical environment, but also because its characteristics conjure associations of vulnerability, impermanence, and the transitory. Furthermore, the method of display in which the gowns are suspended by a thin line emphasizes the experience of these human figures as apparition rather than concrete. This suggests a reduction of the patient from physical reality to abstract concept.

"The Waiting" is a video that pictures the artist clad in a hospital gown, seated uncomfortably in an austere, presumably medical, environment waiting for the doctor to arrive. The visual austerity of the composition, the figure's suspension in the center of the frame and distance from the camera, and the excruciating length of time and physical discomfort, all lead to feelings of alienation, control, and vulnerability.

Featured Artist | Skena e Pavarur Kulturore në Shqipëri [Independent Cultural Scene in Albania]

[via Andi Tepelena]

1. Art Kontakt

2. Albanian Dance Company

3. Albania Art Institute

4. Argjiro

5. Fondacioni EDS

6. Fondacioni Ulisse

7. Fondacioni Gjirokastra

Decision to establish the NETWORK

On May 4, 2013 after a series of meetings and consultations with organizations and individuals operating in the field of art and culture, it was decided to create the NETWORK

Independent Cultural Scene in Albania (S.P.K),

The motivation that led to this decision as follows:

Given the need and desire for a closer collaboration within the Independent Cultural Scene (S.P.K) in Albania, civil society organizations and individuals operating in the field of arts and culture, decided to join forces to promote creative energies, support cultural production and innovation, strengthen managerial capacities, develop cultural dialogue at national and international level, and build a stable climate for the Independent Cultural Scene.

The need to create this NETWORK arose from lack of facilities for cultural and artistic activities, inadequate financing and inequality in accessing public funds for arts and culture in Albania.

The main purpose of the Independent Cultural Scene is to ensure equal conditions of activity when competing with public institutions, and improving the social status of those in culture and arts.

Based on mutual understanding and in line with the identity and mission of each organization and individuals, S.P.K was established as an open and informal NETWORK with a public dimension, focused on the development and proper operation of the Independent Cultural Scene in Albania. All founding members have a joint willpower and the need for cooperation at a national and international level with other Independent Scenes in Western Balkans. The network was created as a platform aiming to influence the public as well as state authorities to create provisions and the appropriate legislation for this scene to work.

Based on these principles, S.P.K aims to:

1. Create a NETWORK that includes as many cultural organizations and individuals as possible.

2. Democratise participation and decision-making within the NETWORK.

3. Establish a dynamic NETWORK that operates in the Albanian territory and throughout the Albanian community abroad.

4. Improve cultural policies in order to encourage a rapid cultural development.

Priorities of S.P.K for the first 12 months:

1. Raising public awareness and sensitizing the political class on the importance of the Independent Cultural Scene and improvement of relevant legislation.

2. Emerging from economic stagnation into a market economy that will provide free enterprise development of this sector.

3. Using new technologies, following the best international trends, keeping up-to-date to attract young people to the activities of Independent Cultural Scene and grow its audience.

4. Increasing collaboration with Independent Cultural Scenes in West Balkans and other prestigious international institutions that support arts and culture.

These goals and priorities will be implemented through communication with the public and civil society; through dialog and negotiations with decision makers at all levels; through lobbying and fundraising; through campaigns, debates and consultations with experts; through collaborations with partner organizations abroad and internationalizing the agenda by seeking support from prestigious organizations.

Founders of the Independent Cultural Scene are as follows:

In the coming days we will publish the names of freelance individuals (artists, producers, managers, curators, media, civil society, academia, etc.)

9 Maj - 2 Qershor // May 9 - June 2, 2013

via MIZA:
Mamma Roma (1962)
Teorema (1968)

Miza Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the group show “Pasolini Prossimo Nostro” [Pasolini Our Next] on May 9, which will be open to the public through June 12, 2013 and will feature the work of various artists who have been influenced by Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922 – 1975) is one of the most courageous and influential artists of the 20th century. His oeuvre, which spans poetry, film and painting, stands in the van guard of mid-century (and beyond) debates on social inequality, violence and the alienation of human beings in modernity. Interpreted by many as perverse and radical, Pasolini’s critique of modernity is also romantic: his films frequently present us with alternative, pre-modern realities, where people live in the absence of religion, government or technology. His social critique is also a testimony of attacks on him as a homosexual and an atheist. And yet, these aspects of his being, which Pasolini never denied or hid, continue to be embodied in his films’ protagonists.
The artists of “Pasolini Prossimo Nostro” have been influenced by and refer to different elements of Pasolini’s vast body of work, but especially his views on power and its effects on the social and individual body, which have been thoroughly articulated [also] in Giuseppe Bertolucci’s documentary with the same title (2006).
As we see in the works of Adrian Paci, Blerdi Fatusha, Endri Dani and Leke M Gjeloshi who coincidentally or not, are all from Shkodra and have lived and worked in Italy, Pasolini’s social critique is highly relevant even today, in Albania and elsewhere.
A more detailed discussion of each artist’s work will be presented on the day of the opening of the exhibition. To better contextualize their work and its relationship to Pasolini’s thought, the exhibition will also be accompanied by the screening of five of his films, the titles of which are listed below:
Mamma Roma (1962)
Teorema (1968)

Hapja // Opening @19:00 h

" Ergys Zhabjaku's photography is characterized by the search for plasticity in photographic language. On the one hand, it explores the expressive possibilities of photography by disregarding technological capacities provided by this tool today and emphasizing individual artistic temperament, while simultaneously looking to document the existence of resistant forms toward urbanizing structures in rural and suburban neighborhoods. The still images belong to a world without regulatory systems, where the energy carried and transmitted by humans is still uncontrolled and untapped."
An essay by Alban Hajdinaj will introduce the work.

Featured Event | My Name Their City by Alban Muja

Autobahn event opening lineup Friday, March 22, 2013:

prezanton // presents:

"EMRI IM, QYTETI I TYRE" // "MY NAME, THEIR CITY"

nga // by
 Alban Muja

March 22 - April 3, 2013
Opening @19:00 h

Alban Muja // Emri im, qyteti i tyre

Alban Muja // My name, their city

“My name, their city” is a series of photographs that explores a very specific Kosovar phenomenon: that of naming Kosovar children after Albanian cities. During the 70's and 80's this kind of naming was linked to the national dream of unifying all Albanian lands. The isolation from and longing for Albania by Kosovars is materialized in names such as Berat, Milot, Saranda, Gjirokastra, shkodran, Butrint and Vlora - as strange as it seems to locals of these towns.

Alban Muja is a Kosovo-based visual artist and filmmaker. Muja explores the concepts of naming, place and politics in his expansive body of work, which includes video installations, short films, documentaries, drawing, painting and performance. One of his most recent projects, My name, their city will be exhibited as part of Autobahn.
